Benzoyl Peroxide is commonly used to treat acne. It has a formulation of two parts benzoyl and one part peroxide. It is used topically to treat acne and is generally found to be effective. However, its efficacy varies from person to person. The use of benzoyl peroxide is also governed by some precautions.

Benzoyl Peroxide is considered a strong beaching agent but is found to be effective in treating mild to moderate acne problems. For sensitive skin, a 2.5% concentration in gel form is available. It also comes in a more concentrated form of 10%. Both concentrations are found to be effective in treating acne.

Benzoyl peroxide is also an effective antiseptic and can effectively reduce bacteria in the surface of the skin. This is an important function in controlling and reducing acne and skin breakouts. It is also an oxidizing agent which is necessary for the skin to remain healthy and young-looking. Another positive function is its anti-inflammatory property. Benzoyl peroxide when used in large amounts can cause skin dryness. Dry skin is not a positive result that is why caution should be observed when applying this medication to areas with acne. It is better to use a small amount first during the initial application and gradually progress to avoid skin irritation. If dryness and scaling occurs, a light and oil-free moisturizer can be applied to the affected area.

This acne medication can also trigger allergic reactions to certain skin types. Caution should be observed during application. If any signs of allergic reactions are observed, it is better to wash the affected area with cold water and discontinue use of benzoyl peroxide.

During application of benzoyl peroxide to acne-affected areas, it is better to avoid the sensitive parts of the face such as the mouth, eyes and inside of the nose. In case of contact to these sensitive parts of the face, wash the areas with cold water immediately to avoid unpleasant skin reactions.
